Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Despite the various cardiorespiratory fitness assessments, VO2max decreases progressively with age. Therefore, there were reports in that the error of measurement was increased. This investigation compared the results of direct and indirect measurements of VO2max of men according age.

METHOD: Healthy 125 men were recruited for this study. Direct estimation of cardiorespiratory endurance (VO2max) comprised graded treadmill exercise test (GXT) followed by expired gas analysis. VO2max was indirectly predicted by Astrand submaximal cycle ergometry test (AST) and 20m multistage shuttle run test (20m-MST). To evaluate differences according age, One-way ANOVA was used. Two-way repeated ANOVA was applied to detect significant differences among the three measurements. Associations among the parameters investigated were analyzed with Pearson correlation and linear regression was used for analyses of relationships among variables. The accuracy of measurements was assessed by Bland-Altman and interclass correlation coefficient analysis.

RESULT: VO2max, which there was a differences in age, in 20s was higher than in other age groups, and 30s or 40s were higher than in 60s. The measurement of GXT showed a significant difference in ages, except in 60s, from the estimates of AST and 20m-MST. Both estimated VO2max of AST and 20m-MST were found underestimated. The measurements of GXT had a low correlation with the estimates of AST and 20m-MST. The error between estimated of 20-MST and measured of GXT values was affected by age (p<.01), weight (p<.01), body mass index (BMI) (p<.001), and percentage of body fat (p<.001) respectively. Moreover, the reliability of 20m-MST was higher than AST.

CONCLUSION: Therefore, 20m-MST is more valid method to evaluate VO2max than AST for men.
